Englefield
Estate Yard is the home of Englefield museum. The
museum, although small, contains a wide variety of
historical items found and used on the Estate, including
a number of carts (Hay and Tipping), cast iron cooking
range, Merryweather water pump and an Avon power saw.
There are also some fine examples of equipment used
during both World Wars when Englefield House was a
hospital.
Also
located in the Yard is the Estate’s Shand Mason
steam powered fire engine. It was purchased in 1887
after a serious fire at Englefield House and is still
in working order today. It takes only 7 minutes to
steam up and pump water.
The
yard also houses one of the few steam boilers still
located and operational in its original position.
The boiler runs and powers two static steam engines.
It is fired up on the Countryside Days and at the
annual Steam Up in October.
Group
visits to the yard and museum is by arrangement only.
