Englefield House is one of the locations featured in the newly released Netflix film, The Thursday Murder Club, based on Richard Osman’s international best-selling novel of the same name.
The film is available in select cinemas in the UK on August 22nd and will be released globally on Netflix on August 28th, appropriately enough, a Thursday!
The plot follows four irrepressible retirees – Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce (Celia Imrie) - who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.
Englefield House is used as the luxury retirement village, Coopers Chase. Englefield Gardens, St Mark’s Church and the drive can also be seen in the film, which was shot in the summer of 2024.
Peter Carson, Englefield Estate’s Events and Filming Manager, said: “It was a pleasure to host the cast and crew of The Thursday Murder Club here at the Estate.
“We are very lucky to welcome film crews to Englefield on a regular basis, but the popularity of this story and the calibre of the cast provided an extra level of interest and excitement.”
The film magazine, Empire, joined the stars and film crew on set and reported on the filming in its August 2025 edition.
The article finishes with a positive endorsement of the Englefield Estate as a location for filming. “Speak to anyone involved and they would jump at the chance to return to Coopers Chase,” it reads.
The final quote in the feature comes from Helen Mirren, who plays Elizabeth Best. She says: “I’d love to spend every summer from now to the day I die playing Elizabeth.”
Englefield House is a private home and not open to the public, however the formal gardens are available to visit every Monday throughout the year, including Bank Holidays. The entrance fee is £5 and more information about opening hours can be found here.
